Buyer’s Guide:

What types of vacuums are available to me with a budget of under $150?

There are five main types of vacuums available on the market and all of them have models for under $150.

a. Handheld vacuums.

As their name suggests, handheld vacuums are the vacuums that you can hold in your hand. They are typically very lightweight. Some of them are cordless and come with charging stations that also serve as vacuum storing docks. Handheld vacuums are great for quick cleanups. They also do a good job when you need to clean places that are hard to reach with other kinds of vacuums.

One of the disadvantages of handheld vacuums is that because of their size you can’t really use a handheld vacuum as your main vacuum, especially if you have a big home and plan on using a vacuum to clean the floors. Not only will it take a long time to clean the floor with a handheld device, you will also have to do it on your knees because handheld vacuums do not come together with long extension wands.

b. Canister vacuums.

Canister vacuums are the ones that have a canister, usually on wheels, attached to a long wand. Some canister vacuums are designed to be carried as a backpack or around a shoulder. Such canisters are typically very light and are designed for garages, auto repair shops and car cleaning. One of the biggest benefits of a canister vacuum is that you don’t have to move the entire body of the vacuum during cleaning. You can only move the wand while the canister stays in one place. This makes canisters a great choice for cleaning the stairs and other hard-to-reach areas. Another benefit of canisters is that they usually trap the dirt better. With upright vacuums the dirt stays in the body of the vacuum, be it in a bag or a bagless container, and moves with the entire body of the vacuum, which increases the chances of small particles getting back into the air. These chances are much smaller with canister vacuums because the dirt gets through the wand into the canister and stays there.

Because the wand can get into many hard-to-reach places, many canisters come with an array of tools that will allow you to clean anything and everything from bare floors to ceiling fans. Other types of vacuums can’t match this versatility, but the versatility is also the reason why canister vacuums tend to be more expensive than other vacuum types.

c. Upright vacuums.

Uprights are some of the most popular vacuums available on the market. Most of them are relatively inexpensive yet they do come with a lot of features. Typically you can use an upright vacuum for bare floors and for carpets. One of the disadvantages of upright vacuums is that they can’t go under the furniture even though many of them do have separate hoses that you can use to clean places where the main head of the vacuum won’t be able to get. Some of the uprights are lightweight while others weight a lot, are noisy and have a lot of power.

d. Stick vacuums.

Stick vacuums are different from the uprights in that they usually have a long slim handle attached to a head. Because the handle is stick-like, you would be able to get your stick vacuum under the furniture and clean areas that would not be accessible to an upright vacuum. Stick vacuums typically weigh much less than uprights.

e. Robotic vacuums.

Robotic vacuums do the work for you. While the technology behind these vacuums is not 100% perfect, robotic vacuums are getting better and better and are gaining more and more popularity. All you have to do to use a robotic vacuum is turn it on and it will roam around your home picking up dirt and dust.
